Police in Delhi have arrested a designer after he confessed to killing a 22-year-old student, who he had met on a dating app. 22-year-old Ayush Nautiyal had left home on 22 March to meet Ishtiaq Ali, but didn’t return home until the former’s family members began receiving messages on WhatsApp demanding Rs 50 lakh.

Police found Nautiyal’s body on Wednesday, almost a week later, floating in a bag inside a drain in Dwarka.

After receiving a missing complaint, the police had formed several teams to trace Nautiyal. The cops even reached Uttam Nagar, where Ali had asked them to deliver the ransom money, but he didn’t turn up. The kidnapper had sent photo of Nautiyal an orange T-shirt with his eyes covered, hands tied and gagged.

“They demanded the money in 48 hours. My father pleaded with them to give him some more time as it was a big amount and the banks were closed due to public holidays,” the victim’s elder sister Disha Nautiyal was quoted by Times of India as saying.

According to NDTV, Nautiyal’s family drove around Dwarka for two days with money, looking for the kidnappers, but to no avail. However, after going through the victim’s mobile records and messages, the cops zeroed in on Ali.

He confessed to killing Nautiyal with a hammer in a fit of rage. Ali told cops that he had cooked up the ransom story to buy time in order to dispose off the body. Nautiyal’s killer lives in Uttam Nagar and works for an export company.

Police have recovered Nautiyal’s mobile phone and the car used to dispose off his body.
